Wine Technical & Oenological Services - Portavin South Australia

Through the application of BRC, HACCP and NATA principles (certification for international wine markets) Portavin SA’s fully equipped laboratory offers supporting and contract analytical services to its customers.

The laboratory division provides technical support to Bottling Operations for pre and post bottling analysis, and analytical support for cellar adjustments. The laboratory is a key player in the maintenance of OH&S standards and regulatory compliance. All employees within the lab are qualified laboratory technicians.

Portavin South Australia has three fully qualified and experienced winemakers on staff ensuring your wine is well looked after at all times.

Services Available:

Pre-receival pre-bottling wine analysis - capability to perform
  • Free Sulphur Dioxide *
  • Total Sulphur Dioxide *
  • pH *
  • Titrateable acidity to 8.2 pH end point *
  • Titrateable acidity to 7.0 pH end point *
  • Alcohol *
  • Specific Gravity / Density *
  • Volatile Acidity *
  • Glucose + Fructose *
  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Turbidity
  • Microbial checking of bottled product

* NATA accredited analysis
Currently we are also developing methods for Malic Acid & Acetic Acid.
A pricelist for these services can be supplied upon request.

Free Pre-bottling Analysis (provided with bottling service) - free analyses include:

  • Tanker checks before unloading the wine - fSO2, TSO2, Alcohol and Turbidity
  • Wine receival analyses, conducted on wine in tanks once it has been unloaded - fSO2, TSO2, pH/TA, Alcohol, DO, CO2, Turbidity and temperature.

 

Bulk Wine Maintenance Analysis:

Portavin SA does not offer long term storage of wine. Portavin SA charges for extended storage of wine where the customer is at fault (e.g. late supply of dry goods) Maintenance analysis are also charged. Customers are given the option to remove their wine in such circumstances.

Portavin SA does not charge for extended storage or maintenance charges where the delay has been caused by Portavin SA equipment or programme change.

Adjustments to wine chemistry, through additions or sparges are charged for, as are the subsequent analytical checks. All such adjustments are reported to the customer for wine approval.

Post bottling analysis:

Free post-bottling analysis provided with bottling service.
Bottling Analysis * (1st bottle off the line)

  • Alcohol, Turbidity, Density and DO

Post Bottling Analysis * (30 minutes into the run)

  • fSO2, TSO2, pH, TA, Alcohol, Turbidity, DO, CO2


In Progress Bottling Analysis:

Any in progress bottling analysis requested will incur a charge. All analysis generated by Portavin SA for a wine will be reported once the job is completed and volumes and dry goods reconciled.


Contract Analysis Services:
  • This is offered to bottling customers at a reduced rate.
  • Industry members and general public can also use the service at our full fee for service rate.
  • Rates for the analytical service can be supplied upon request, and discount for quantity will be negotiated.


Export Analysis Services:

Portavin SA has NATA accreditation and NATA accredited signatories to facilitate this service. Continuing Approval Analyses Certificates for wine exports from Australia are supplied in AWBC acceptable format.

  • VI1 analysis certificates for wines going to the EU including special late harvest and bulk wine.
  • Certificates for Analysis for export to China and Japan.


Cellar Services

  • Storage in insulated, temperature controlled tanks.
  • Additions of Sulphur Dioxide.
  • Nitrogen or Carbon Dioxide sparging to adjust dissolved gases.
  • Wine cooling to bottling specification

Rates for these services can be supplied upon request.
