Portavin - McWilliam’s bottling agreement finalised

Portavin Integrated Wine Services has reached an agreement with McWilliam’s Wines which will see Portavin add McWilliam’s Wines Cellar and Bottling facility, Sydney, to its portfolio of wine packaging facilities.

The agreement, which commences on October 4th, has far reaching benefits for both businesses, reducing complexity within the business model for McWilliam’s Wines while providing Portavin with a location in the strategic Sydney market.

Mike Davies, Portavin Executive Chairman said “This agreement consolidates our ongoing relationship with McWilliams whilst completing our In Market contract bottling network throughout Australia and New Zealand.” As Australia’s largest independent wine packaging specialist, Portavin already has facilities across Australia and New Zealand, including Perth, Margaret River, Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland. Portavin is committed to upgrading the Chullora facility, so as to offer world class contract packaging services in line with their other sites.

Portavin will manage the bottling and packaging of all McWilliam’s Wines products. McWilliam’s employees with packaging and laboratory roles based at the Chullora site will be transferred to Portavin with full entitlements.  Portavin will also manage packaging for other wine producers at the Chullora facility.

“Packaging is a highly complex and specialised operation. Outsourcing these operations to a specialist packaging operator like Portavin will allow the McWilliam’s Wines business to be clearly and entirely focused on its core strengths, which is creating world class wines and being an industry leader in marketing and selling our portfolio,” McWilliam’s Wines Chief Executive Officer, Rob Blackwell said.

Both Portavin and McWilliams look forward to building on their already strong relationship.

The Portavin team is also pleased to announce the appointment of Eddie Price as General Manager of the new Portavin N.S.W. operation. Eddie has a strong background in wine industry management including ten years at Amberley Estate in Margaret River, three years as General Manager of Portavin Victoria and more recently as acting General Manager of Portavin W.A.

MANAGEMENT RESTRUCTURE - March 2011

For some time the ownership and senior management team of the Portavin group of companies have been working towards a merger of the regional businesses into one.  While this amalgamation will bring minimal change to Portavin’s service levels and operations at a regional level, it will enable the business to modernize and improve overall efficiencies.

In line with this objective, we have announced the following;
  • As of 29th March 2011, Gerlinde Watson has assumed the position of Portavin Group CFO moving into the position of CFO of the amalgamated business as it occurs.
  • As of 29th March 2011 Eddie Price has assumed the position of acting General Manager of Portavin WA until Anthony Davis moves into the role permanently later in 2011.
We welcome Eddie to the team, wish Gerlinde and Anthony the best in their new positions and look forward to ensuring our business is best positioned to continue to serve the Australasian Wine industry

WINNING CHARDONNAYS - January 2011

Portavin Margaret River congratulates three of its clients, each of whom was awarded a Five Star award by the prestigious UK based wine magazine, Decanter.

The panel tasted 116 Chardonnays from around the world  for a report to be published in the March issue of Decanter.  Just five Australian wines were given Five Stars and the three WA wines were all from Margaret River – and all were bottled by Portavin.

Adam Lechmire (25th January 2011 www.decanter.com.au) reported the winning Margaret River wines and the judge’s brief comments on each as follows:

Evans & Tate, Margaret River WA 2009
'Lovely, complex, refined aroma of honey, delicate wild flowers...'

Killerby, Margaret River, WA 2009
'Wow! Aromas of exotic fig, melon, nuts, beeswax...'

Stella Bella, Margaret River WA 2008
'A complex bouquet of honey, minerals, petits pois...'

The panel praised the freshness and restraint of the wines, their structural complexity, their handling of oak and alcohol, and winemakers’ conscious reining-back to show the quality of the fruit and terroir.  Portavin is proud to ensure that these five star wines were bottled as the winemaker intended and again, congratulates Evans and Tate, Killerby and Stella Bella on this fine achievement

WINE DRINKERS PREFER PET - December 2010

PET bottles are now the preferred alternative to glass in the all important UK wine market. The following article by Carol Emmas appeared on Harper’s Wine and Spirits website on 20th October 2010.

“The PET bottle has edged in front of the Bag-in-Box (BIB) and Tetrapak in popularity according to Wine Intelligence research.

A consumer survey of UK monthly wine drinkers, conducted in June 2010 showed that 40% of respondents said they would be likely to buy wine in a PET bottle in the future, compared with 37% for BIB and 21% for a pouch, although the scores still lagged a long way behind glass.

The report confirms that consumers still overwhelmingly back the 75cl glass bottle for almost all wine drinking occasions, particularly in social settings. Alternative packaging has more relevance in outdoor settings, or when carrying heavier glass bottles are inconvenient.”

New Closures Agreement - July 2010

This new arrangement will commence on the 1st July 2010.

We look forward to working closely with our Amcor friends and contributing towards the great products and relationships that the Stelvin and Vinguard teams have developed.

New Zealand starts bottling - March 2010

Monday the 22nd March 2010 was a very exciting day for the Portavin team as it marked the first bottles to run down Portavin New Zealand's Auckland bottling line.

The first bottling was for the well known and highly represpected New Zealand wine brand "The Ned". The Ned's 09 Sauvignon Blanc destined for the UK market was bottled, labelled and packaged in the new premises in Penrose.

Mike Davies Portavin chairman said, "we are extremely happy with the performance and efficiency of our machinery and our new kiwi crew did an outstanding job to make the first bottling run extremely smoothly.

We are equally pleased that the first wine we bottled is such a well recognised and respected New Zealand brand.

The hard work of our Kiwi team to establish and prepare our site in Southpark Place, Penrose, was rewarded with a hassle free start-up of the line and associated technical support services.

With some temporary assistance from experienced members of the Portavin team in Western Australia and Victoria the first run is going very smoothly.

Thanks to all involved!

Over the next few months we look forward to welcoming our potential clientele to look over this exciting development of the Portavin Australasian business group.”
